One of the hottest political/moral issues of the day is the
question of whether or not same sex marriage is right or not. Some
states and cities have legalized “civil unions” and same-sex marriages,
and there is a move on to amend the constitution to define marriage as
only between a man and a woman. Below I have summarized an article by
James A. Smith, Jr., from For Faith and Family Magazine, May-June
2004, titled “10 Reasons to Oppose Same-sex Marriage.”
10. Many homosexuals know better. The homosexual lobby is pushing
for the “right” to “marry,” but many homosexuals do not want to marry,
and in fact see marriage as an enemy to their chosen lifestyle. They
want to demolish the current culture.
9. Americans believe better. Significant majorities of Americans
oppose homosexual “marriage.”
8. History reveals better. Never in history has marriage been
anything but the union of a man and a woman.
7. Language defines it better. The words homosexual and
marriage can’t logically be combined. They are contradictory.
6. Religious liberty promises better. The first amendment
protects freedom of religion. Government endorsement of homosexual
marriage will lead to forced acceptance by religious groups and
churches.
5. The “slippery slope” shows it better. If same-sex marriage is
a right, why won’t other deviant behavior such as incest, polygamy, etc.
be right?
4. Nature proves
it better. Same-sex relationships contradict nature. Men and women
are different for a purpose.
3. Children grow better. Two people of the same sex cannot
produce children, and it is well established that fathers and mothers
are both critical to the development of children.
2. Restoring the family is better. Traditional marriage is in
trouble, with divorce, cohabitation, and many others problems
increasing. Same-sex marriage will only accelerate problems.
1.
God definitely teaches us better. God calls the union of a man and
woman “very good” (Genesis 1:31). Marriage of a man and woman pictures
Christ and his bride, the church (Ephesians 5).
