Jesus, having all power in heaven and earth, commands us,
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to
observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with
you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matthew
28:19-20). When we consider the magnitude of this great commission, it
is overwhelming. How can we possibly “teach all nations”?
In response, we support mass evangelism projects. House
to House/Heart to Heart now exceeds two million copies per issue.
In Search of the Lord’s Way with Mack Lyon is broadcast throughout
the nation, as well as several foreign countries. Preaching the
Gospel with James Watkins is also reaching many, with local TV and
radio programs. And a new satellite television network, the Gospel
Broadcasting Network (GBN) has been launched, with hopes that before too
long it will be carried on cable systems throughout the country.
Potentially it will reach further millions of people.
I support these good efforts. However, the answer to
carrying out the great commission is really found in thinking small. My
contributions of money, prayer and support to mass evangelism efforts,
and our own local print and radio efforts are important. But the key is
to think small. None of us can reach everyone. Even if the GBN were
carried on every cable system in the United States, many people would
never see it or pay attention to it. That is why we must think small.
By thinking small, I mean that I need to talk to my own
friends, neighbors, and family. Even with the 3,000 added to the church
on Pentecost (Acts 2), they each came as individuals. There is someone
who you can influence to visit worship services, study the Bible, or
obey the gospel. In fact, there is probably someone that you and only
you can reach. What will they say to you on judgment day? THINK
SMALL!
