There is a continual battle between those who have been
seeking freedom to teach “Intelligent Design” [I. D.], in contrast to
the mandated theory of material evolution in America’s classrooms. As
the battle is waged in courtrooms across the land, those who hold to
evolution deny any scientific validity to I.D., and say it is nothing
but religion. What they fail to understand is that the concept of a
designer for our designed world is neither unscientific, nor necessarily
a religious concept. They also fail to recognize that their adherence to
materialistic evolution has just as many earmarks of religion as the I.
D. movement does.
Joel Belz, made some interesting points in an editorial in
World, August 20, 2005, concerning the issue. He pointed out that
in the famous story of the two mothers claiming the same baby as their
own, Solomon was able to discern that the real mother, who would be
telling the truth, would be the one to show the more generosity.
Belz spoke of the furor created when President Bush
responded to a question about whether or not ID should be allowed in the
classrooms by saying,
Part of education is to expose people to
different schools of thought. You’re asking me whether or not people
ought to be exposed to different ideas. The answer is yes. … Both sides
ought to be properly taught … so people can understand what the debate
is about.
Belz notes the “grumpy stubbornness” of the evolutionary
crowd, who refuse to even consider any other evidence: “‘Look’ cries
someone with gleeful delight. ‘Let me show you the snowflake. Look at
its incredible design.’ ‘Don’t want to’ comes the bad-tempered reply.”
What are they so afraid of? Since “all of the evidence,”
they say, is in favor of evolution, why are they so afraid that anyone
would consider the evidence of Intelligent Design? David understood the
evidence. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament
showeth his handiwork” (Psalm 19:1).
